Why Pauhu
EU-jurisdiction AI, with human review when it counts.
Founded 2018 as Käännöstoimisto Pauhu (continuing the earlier Käännöstoimisto Isis bureau). The AI translation models came online in 2026 and are operated in-house. Same operator, same human-review heritage, much cheaper for content that does not need a full human pass.
Our own AI
Pauhu's translation models are trained, fine-tuned, and run on Pauhu infrastructure in Helsinki. Source text is never sent to OpenAI, Google, DeepL, or any third-party LLM API.
EU jurisdiction
Hetzner Dedicated in Helsinki, under Finnish law. GDPR-clean by construction. For confidential legal, healthcare, and public-sector translation this is the difference between approved and not-approved.
ISO 17100 when it counts
The Käännöstoimisto bureau heritage. For contracts, regulator submissions, court-filed material, a named human translator works from scratch and a second translator revises. Both translators named on the delivery.
Translation memory yours to keep
At delivery you get the translation memory (TMX) and term base (TBX) for the project. Take them with you, feed them into your own CAT tool, hand them to the next translator if you ever need to. Most bureaus keep TM as their proprietary asset, Pauhu does not.
FAQ
Common questions.
Whose AI does Pauhu use to translate?
Pauhu's own translation models. Trained, fine-tuned, and run on EU-jurisdiction infrastructure (Helsinki, Hetzner Dedicated). Customer source text is not sent to OpenAI, Google, DeepL, or any other third-party LLM API. This is the differentiator from competitors that resell those services under a Nordic brand.
Which language pairs does Pauhu translate between?
Finnish, Swedish, and English in any direction at home-pair rates. Finnish ↔ German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Estonian, Danish, Norwegian on standard EU rates. Other EU languages on request.
What does Pauhu charge for translation?
From €279 per seat per month. Every seat you add is cheaper than the last. Heavy use is included: no per-word charge, no metering. Own AI models on EU-jurisdiction infrastructure, CAT app, translation memory (TMX) and term base (TBX), and human review on request under an ISO 17100 workflow. VAT 25.5% added for Finnish customers; EU B2B reverse-charge applies in normal cross-border cases.
How is the AI tier different from Google Translate or DeepL?
Pauhu owns the models. The text is processed on Pauhu's servers in Helsinki under Finnish law and EU jurisdiction, not sent to a US-jurisdiction third-party API. For confidential customer material (legal, healthcare, public-sector), this is the difference between a usable AI translation and one that legal cannot approve.
When do I want human translation, not AI?
When the source needs a human in the loop from the start, brand voice, marketing copy, anything where the AI's plausible-but-wrong choice of word would cost more to fix later than the price difference. A named translator works from scratch and signs off the delivery.
When do I want human translation + review?
When the workflow demands ISO 17100, contracts, regulator submissions, court-filed material, or any case where a customer policy or audit requires two-translator sign-off. A second human translator revises the first translator's work. Both translators are named on the delivery.
How fast does Pauhu deliver?
AI translation: instant once the file is parsed (typically 1-3 minutes). Human translation: same-business-day quote, then volume-dependent delivery. Human translation + review: typically next business day for jobs under 5,000 words. Quote requests received before 16:00 EET on a Helsinki working day get a price the same day.
Do I get the translation memory and term base?
Yes. At delivery you receive your translation memory (TMX) and term base (TBX) for the project, yours to keep, take with you, or feed into your own CAT tool. Most bureaus treat TM as their proprietary asset; Pauhu does not. Per-customer terminology is maintained across years of work and the export is part of the standard delivery.
How does Pauhu handle confidential documents?
NDA on request before any source material changes hands. Source files stored on EU-jurisdiction infrastructure (Helsinki, Hetzner Dedicated). The AI translation tier runs on the same infrastructure, source text is not sent to third-party LLM APIs at any tier. Delivery via Turvaposti (Finnish secure-email service used by public sector and law firms) or PGP available on request.
